Murtede

Located in the extreme east of the municipality of Cantanhede, district of Coimbra, already closer to Mealhada than to its county town, Cantanhede, at an elevation between 100 and 200 meters, still integrated in the plain of Gândara and in the heart of Bairrada, the parish develops over an area of 2,027 ha.

In addition to the parish seat (Murtede), it also includes the localities of Enxofães, Porto de Carros, Carvalho and Casal das Sete Fontes, as well as some streets in the locality of Cordinhã. Balancing its dependence on many issues between Cantanhede and Mealhada, Murtede lives side by side with its neighbouring parishes, such as Sepins (to the north), Ourentã (to the northwest), Cordinhã (to the west), Casal Comba (to the east) and Barcouço (to the south). It dictates about eight kilometres, to the west, from the city that is the county town.

Murtede has been in the municipality of Cantanhede since 1836. Before, in the eighteenth century, and although belonging to Coimbra, it had been a council, for judicial purposes, with a judge appointed by the Chamber.

Cantanhede is located in the central region of Portugal, in the province of Beira Litoral. The economy is predominantly tertiary in the city, and primary in the other parishes of the municipality. The vineyard landscape in plain surrounds the city of Cantanhede. Cantanhede wine is internationally recognised for its characteristic flavour due to the unique growing conditions of the vine.
